Meet the Artist
Sarah B. Whitley
Graphic Designer
Graduating Senior at Radford University
My name is Sarah, and I’ve been an artist for over fifteen years. I’ve dabbled in a multitude of media, from ceramics to watercolor, though I tend to prefer colored pencil and graphite. I have a looser style and tend toward saturated and bright colors. I’ve always loved the whimsical and illustrating impossible creatures (especially dragons) is a lifelong passion of mine. You can contact me any time at sbwhitley11@gmail.com
About the Book
For my senior project, I have made an original, fully illustrated children's book. It's a Christmas themed book featuring a light-up decoration coming to life. I took inspiration from the James Center Christmas exhibit in Richmond, VA for my setting, and I hope I was successful in capturing the magic of the real place. I dedicated my book to the children of VCU Hospital’s 10th ward. I spent the Christmas of 2013 getting to know these resilient and beautiful souls, and I wanted to return some of the joy they gave me. There is precious little representation of children or adults in their situation. It is so important to see others going through hardship and coming out the other side to keep you going, especially at a time like Christmas, where the idealized “Holiday Season” is not always a reality.
